Pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 at Cherry Hills International School visited Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) for an educational tour led by a guide from the Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) Media team.
Outside Terminal 1, the guide explained what a terminal is and why an airport may have more than one, pointing out Terminal 2. Inside, pupils were introduced to the check-in desks and the steps passengers take before proceeding to security.
At the security area, the guide showed pupils items that are prohibited and explained why they are restricted. The pupils were then invited to name one prohibited item each before the group passed through security.
With airside access, pupils learned about gates, aircraft parking stands, taxiways and the runway. The guide explained that aircraft take off into the wind and pointed out the control towers, describing their roles in aviation.
During the walk towards Terminal 2, pupils watched a Kenya Airways Boeing 737 and an Airlink Embraer E190 take off. The Kenya Airways aircraft's take-off drew a particularly excited response from the pupils. They also saw a Proflight Jetstream 41 and a Proflight CRJ-200 take off, as well as a Zambia Airways Q400 land.
At Terminal 2, the guide explained jetways and when they are used. After entering the terminal from the airside, pupils visited the boarding and waiting areas and learned about their purpose. Before leaving, pupils took photographs beside the cheetah statue, and the group returned to school at around 13:30.
